Exploring 90s school days

There was a time when going to school wasn’t just about studies. It was an experience, a routine filled with people, noise, and little joys, and the real memory of our life is mostly from 90s school days.

Today, school still exists. But the feeling, however, has completely changed.

If you’re a 80s or 90s kid, you will be able to related yourself with this 90s school days blog. Let’s walk through a school day… then vs now.

🌅 Waking Up

90s:
“Uth ja beta… school ke liye late ho jayega!”
One call… two calls… ten calls 😄
No alarms – just mother’s voice and father’s slaps.

Now:
Digital alarms. Snooze. Snooze again.
Therefore, waking up feels more mechanical than emotional.

🪥 Morning Routine

90s:
There used to be one bathroom and hence, brothers and sisters started fighting.
Uniforms used to be ironed last night.
Everything is simple, yet full of life.

Now:
Everything is faster now, however, organized and efficient.
But environment seems quieter… less noise, less conversation.

90s school days

🍳 Breakfast

90s:
Breakfast used to include hot parathas in desi ghee with mango pickle. Other options were biscuits, chapati-vegetable combination.
Mothers used to force: “Ek aur kha le!” and it was not just food, it was pure love.

Now:
Breakfast includes bread, cereal, sandwiches, etc.
Quick bites. Less time. Less connection. Less healthier.

🎒 School Preparation

90s:
We used to pack bags by checking the time-table again and again. We used to mention time-table in our school diary. And it was a time when forgetting even one notebook ensured punishment in front of the entire class. 😅

Now:
Responsibilities are pre-managed now. Parents help in even simple tasks. Being technie, sometimes even apps guide.
Though stress is reduced, somewhere we lost connection with those unforgettable memories of 90s school days.

If you watched Doordarshan News in 90s, you must remember these News Anchors:

🚶‍♂️ Leaving for School

90s:
Getting ready in minutes and walking to the bus stop with father, mother, or grandfather. And
laughing, talking, living the moment with colleagues waiting for the bus at the bus stop.

Now:
Bus mostly pick students at the doorstep.
Though it’s safe and convenient, however, those lovely time we spent has lost with 90s school days.

🚌 Bus Journey

90s:
This was an exciting war when we used to enter the bus. Seat fights was very common.

It was like Window seats = achievement 🏆
Singing songs, shouting, sharing stories, etc. remain vital.

Now:
Disciplined seating has been emphasized.
Sometimes students are found focusing on phones. Less noise and less bonding has seized the real essence of childhood.

🏫 Assembly

90s:
Who can forget the assembly time? Prayer, national anthem, thought of the day.
Standing in lines under the sun. Still never complained about the scorching heat.

Now:
Still there… but shorter, quicker, more formal.

📚 Classroom

90s:
Chalk, blackboard, notebooks. Benches and desks. These were the school assets we were the owner of. We used to take care of everything. Hardly broken anything as they were part of our 90s school days.
Teacher talking, students listening (or pretending to 😄)

Now:
Smart boards, videos, digital learning.
More advanced… less personal.

🍱 Lunch Break

90s:
“Tera tiffin me kya hai?”. This was the most common question we used to ask our co-partners.
One lunch box, many hands. We used to share food with each other. Limited appetite and we could hardly consume 2 chapatis and spend the entire day.

Now:
Less sharing. Packaged food.
Sometimes kids eat quietly with no quality.

🎯 Play Time

90s:
Kho-kho, cricket, kabaddi, carrom, etc.
Sweat, dust, laughter.

These were the actual games we used to play during our Sports period. The excitement used to be at highest level when we get to know the next period is of Sports.

Now:
Limited playground time. Sometimes, schools lack a playground and focus more on indoor games.
Sports is more structured and restricted now.

🤝 Friendship

90s:
Passing notes, laughing in class, and real conversations.

Sharing notebooks with each other to copy the missing content.

Sometimes sharing the books with the friend sitting next if he/she forgot to bring the book.

Now:
Same friends… but conversations often shift to screens. Bonding level has tremendously decreased.

🔔 School Ends

90s:
The best moment of school life when we curiously awaited last bell of the day. Being prepared with packed bag, and tied shoes. As soon as the first tone of the bell heard, we used to run out of the class as fast as we could. This was all about being at the first position in the line.

Now:
Organized exit. Straight home.

🏠 After School

90s:
Bag throw → food → OUTSIDE PLAY
No permission needed. No planning required.

Now:
Homework. Tuition. Screens.
Play is scheduled… not spontaneous.

Sports has been reduced and career has been emphasized more.

💭 Final Thought

School still exists.
Books still exist.
Uniforms still exist.

But something oreverything quietly disappeared…

👉 The people, the chaos, the togetherness, the love.

The 90s didn’t just teach lessons from books. We hardly remember name of even one book.
The actual learning came from friendship, independence, sharing, and living in the moment. And this still stays in our heart & memory.

❤️ Ask Yourself

Were we less advanced back then?
Yes.

Were we more connected?
Absolutely.
